Democratising healthcare with AI
Using artificial intelligence to expand access, reduce cost barriers, and support more equitable care.
Healthcare systems around the world are under growing pressure from rising costs, workforce shortages, and persistent gaps in access, particularly for people in rural, remote, and underserved communities.
We argue that AI can help address these challenges by extending health guidance, improving triage, supporting earlier detection, and connecting people to appropriate care without the same dependence on physical location or immediate specialist availability.
AI has the potential to make healthcare more accessible by helping people understand symptoms, receive timely guidance, and identify the right next step, whether that is self-care, a routine appointment, specialist review, urgent care, or emergency support. The emphasis is on trusted, plain-language health guidance delivered through a mobile-first experience.
AI can also improve affordability by automating parts of care delivery, reducing unnecessary visits, supporting better resource allocation, and enabling earlier intervention before conditions become more serious and expensive to manage. This democratising effect is organised around four practical dimensions: accessibility, affordability, usability, and ethical regulation.
At the same time, equitable impact depends on responsible implementation. We stress that privacy, bias mitigation, transparency, usability across different literacy levels, and strong governance must be built into AI systems to reduce disparities rather than deepen them.
Used well, AI does not replace clinicians. It supports a more human-centred, scalable, and inclusive model of care in which more people can access timely guidance, understand their options clearly, and seek appropriate care at a cost they can better afford.
